Nestled in the heart of Pune at Chhatrapati Shivaji Nagar Gaothan, Shri Shivajiraje Mardani Akhada is more than just a training academy — it’s a movement to preserve and protect the essence of Maharashtra’s proud martial heritage. For more than 16 years, our Akhada has been a living example of Mardani Khel, a traditional Indian martial art practiced by the Maratha warriors under the guidance of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.
Our Akhada is built on the principles of discipline, courage, respect, and perseverance — the same principles that forged our great warriors. You can be a child, youth, adult, or foreigner who wants to rediscover Indian culture, and this is your chance to enter the world of courage and tradition.
Mardani Khel: What is it?
With a history spanning several centuries, Mardani Khel is among India’s rarest and oldest martial arts. It is a combat art form that combines mental discipline, weapon handling, and agility. Dandpatta (gauntlet sword), Lathi (stick), Talwar (sword), Bhala (spear), Vita (corded dart), Kurhad, Khanjir, Madu, Gurja, Bana, Fari-Gajga, and others are used in this art form, which was initially created for battlefield attack and defense. In addition to teaching self-defence, Mardani Khel instills values of mental and physical balance, love of fitness, and respect for culture. We want to preserve this amazing legacy and make it relevant and empowering for today’s generations through our Akhada.
Our Journey
Founded by Mr. Vijay Ayawale-Patil, a devoted cultural revivalist and martial arts trainer, our Akhada began as a small collective of passionate students determined to preserve the rich legacy of Mardani Khel. What started as a humble initiative has grown into a respected institution under the Shivrudra Mardani Akhada Trust (Registered under the Public Trust Act, 1950 | Reg. No – E8381/Pune). To date, we have trained over 6,000 students, many of whom have showcased their skills at heritage festivals, cultural events, and prominent stages across India and around the world.
